Sailing - Sea [3/3]

Sea sailing is quite different. You need more qualifications, different licence, it is more dangerous, it gives more adrenaline, wider posibilities to travel.

If you go on sea, you must know, that you can not go to shore whenever you want, because you can
moor only in harbours and marinas. You have to reckon with the weather, it is element and it may be not predictable. Sometimes you have to fight, maybe not for life, but you need to work, the whole crew for example, during the storm. Sea it is a seasick also, it depends on the person, but it usually last about 1-2 days. While longer runs, without a hammering to the shore, all the time someone has to steer the yacht, so the crew is divided into a watches. When it is your turn you have to get up in the middle of the night, even if it is raining and you have all wet your clothes.
You have to fight with sleep, your life and the rest of the crew depends on you. You live a quite long time with 6-10 people on the small patch of the surface, sometimes conflicts arise. The crew has to do dishes from a limited menu. But as you are soaked and frozen even the bread with lard taste great:)

I began a description of the macabre, and quite daunting, but it is only one part, you should known about it, but fortunately there is another side, the better side :).

You have almost unlimited opportunities to travel, you can even sail around the whole world. Sailing on the sea, you feel so peculiar freedom, you can look at the world from a totally different perspective. You feel closeness to nature, often do not see the land being on the high seas. You depends on mother nature, you have to count on a fair wind.

In my career I have sailed on the Baltic and Adriatic seas. On the Baltic Sea to Germany, Sweden and up to the Åland Islands. On the Adriatic in Croatia.

The Baltic Sea is less friendly, it is cool up to about 20st, but there are many beautiful places that you can see.

In Croatia, it almost looks like sailing on the lake, almost no waves, is close from the shore to shore, the water is very warm, you can sit in it for hours spending time on the dive. Visiting the town, also makes a lot of pleasure, such coastal Adriatic towns are very attractive and sometimes quite exotic. You can try the local cuisine, specializing in seafood, they have a good wine as well.

There are no such words to describe it, just look on photos:

  1. Sailing is one of the things that I would like to "start to". Wind and water, two elements of environment that are really exciting for me. I always wanted to take a part in some regatta, like the race, or Americans Cup :)))

  3. As I said before I would love to have a chance to sail in Croatia:) I guess that in this case you have to rent a bout with skipper?

  6. That would be so nice to sail on sea. It’s one of my dreams. When I discovered that renting a yacht in Croatia Isn’t so terribly expensive I started dreaming about proper license. I have heard that it costs about 2000 euro to lend a yacht for 10 people crew. That’s 200 euro a head, and that’s not so bad when considering such a adventure.

  7. Kniaz, no, you don't have to hire a skipper, if you have appropriate licence, you can sail at your own. Price depends on time when you want to rent a boat, in the middle of the season, it may be two times higher, and the size of the boat.
If you want, you can find offer for boat for 6 people for about 1000-1300eu per week, ofcourse not in the middle of the season :)

  9. Great photos. I must try sea sailing but I think I need more practise in inland sailing before I try this. And idea of sailing in Croatia is promising.
